Isabella and Penelope by Maggie Grinnell Book Review
Isabella and Penelope by Maggie Grinnell is a children’s book about a little girl named Isabella, who lost her father in a plane crash, and Penelope, a pink caterpillar who has feelings.
Since losing her father, Isabella has stopped speaking, but one day she meets Penelope, whom she befriends and when Penelope transforms into a beautiful butterfly, Isabella herself transforms, and she finds the ability to speak once more.
The author, Maggie Grinnell, does an excellent job tackling a heavy subject in a way that does not overwhelm young children and helps parents start a discussion with their children about the loss of a loved one.
I love the symbolism of the butterfly to show growth and transformation. I also found the childlike illustrations adorable and perfect for young readers.
